Newspaper Headline:

“Cybercrime Surges in Goa; 1,500 Complaints in 4 Months”

The report highlights the growing danger of:

Digital Arrest Scams

Fake Investment & Trading Frauds

Online Banking & UPI Scams

Cryptocurrency-related Fraud

AI-enabled Deepfake Impersonation

Sextortion & Honey Trap Cases

Remote Access & Malware Exploitation

QR Code & OTP Manipulation Attacks

According to the published report:

Cybercrime cases in Goa increased from:

82 Cases (2023)

85 Cases (2024)

131 Cases (2025)

Financial losses linked to investment scams alone reportedly crossed hundreds of crores

In my statement to the newspaper I emphasised that:

“Cybercriminals are no longer isolated individuals Many frauds are executed by highly organised interstate and international syndicates Cyber fraud should not be viewed merely as a technological challenge It is now a major economic psychological legal & national security concern affecting individuals, businesses & institutions”

From a cyber-forensic and cyber investigation perspective, this increase can be attributed to a combination of technological advancement, rapid digital dependency, organized cybercrime networks, and insufficient cyber awareness among the public. Today, cybercriminals are no longer operating as isolated individuals. Many frauds are executed by highly organized interstate and international syndicates using advanced social engineering techniques, fake digital identities, mule bank accounts, cryptocurrency channels, VoIP communication systems, phishing infrastructure, darknet resources, and AIenabled deception tactics. Fraudsters are continuously adapting their methods faster than public awareness and defensive mechanisms.

Goa, being a globally connected tourism and commercial destination with a large number of online financial transactions, tourists, hospitality businesses, startups, expatriates, and digitally active citizens, naturally becomes an attractive target for cybercriminals. Increased digital payments, online bookings, internet banking, social media usage, gaming platforms, investment applications, and remote work environments create broader attack surfaces for cyber fraud operations.
